What is a root canal?

Inside each tooth is soft tissue with nerves and blood vessels, called the pulp. When the pulp becomes infected or badly inflamed — from deep decay, a crack or an injury — a root canal cleans out the infection so the tooth can stay in your mouth instead of being removed.

Signs you may need one include a lingering toothache, pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot or cold that doesn’t go away, or swelling in the gums. Sometimes there are no symptoms and the problem shows up on an X-ray.

What to expect

Root canals have a reputation, but today’s techniques and good numbing make the treatment much more comfortable than many people expect.

1. Numbing. Your dentist numbs the tooth and the area around it.
2. Cleaning. The infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and shaped.
3. Sealing. The empty space is filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha and sealed.
4. Protecting the tooth. Most treated teeth then need a crown to protect them from breaking and to restore normal chewing.

After treatment

You may be sore for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually help. If you have unusual pain or swelling, call us at (601) 825-1105 so we can check the tooth.
