What to do right now

These first-aid steps can help until you’re seen. They don’t replace an exam.

A knocked-out adult tooth

  1. Pick it up by the crown (the chewing part), not the root.
  2. If it’s dirty, rinse it gently with milk or water for a few seconds. Don’t scrub it.
  3. If you can, put it back in the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in milk or inside your cheek (not for young children, who might swallow it).
  4. Call us right away — time matters with a knocked-out tooth.

A knocked-out baby tooth should not be put back in. Call us so we can check the area.

A broken or chipped tooth

Rinse with warm water, save any pieces, and use a cold compress on the outside of your face for swelling. Call us to be seen.

Toothache

Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove anything caught between your teeth. A cold compress on the cheek can help. Don’t put aspirin or other painkillers against the gums. Call us to be seen.

Swelling in your face or gums

Swelling can mean an infection. Call us the same day. If swelling is spreading or makes it hard to breathe or swallow, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

A lost crown or filling

Keep the crown if you have it and call us. Don’t glue it back on with household glue.

Bleeding after an extraction

Bite firmly on clean gauze for 30 minutes. If bleeding doesn’t slow down, call us — or go to the emergency room if it’s heavy and won’t stop.
